Day 49: Bonjour Bordeaux!
It felt bittersweet to leave Italy. We'd only been there for about a month but it felt like a lot longer. And with Duolingo, we were actually getting a little bit better with our Italian too. Oh well... Cheese, baguettes and Bordeaux wine need to be consumed so onwards to France!
We arrived in Bordeaux airport and were picked up by our Airbnb host. While she didn't speak a lot of English, she was able to point out the various sites of the city and give us a few tips (including the best bakery I've ever been to). She was so sweet – she knew it was our honeymoon so left a bottle of champagne – yes, actual champagne, not that sparkling wine business – as a little gift. So nice!
Desperate for French cheese and bread, we ventured out into our neighbourhood of Chartrons for a few snacks. Bordeaux wine from the friendly man in the wine store, un baguette from the man who would soon see us every day for the next few days, pate from the butcher, cheese from the cheese shop and a sweet apple from the fruit shop. It sounds silly me listing each shop out like this, but in Sydney you seem to just go to Coles or something similar, so it's nice to go to specific shops.
Not much else to report. In an effort to save money and to eat a little healthier, we went to the supermarket, picked up some salad and some duck and made a (surprise, surprise) duck salad. And that's about it. Don't worry, more eating will be had in Bordeaux. Trust us.
