Hello.

My husband and I left our lives in Sydney to go travelling for the rest of 2016. What started as a one month honeymoon has turned into a four month adventure.

Team tempura! I wish I had a nicer looking apron.

One of the things I wanted to do before I left Japan was some kind of Japanese cooking class. Many of the classes I had found were upwards of ¥15,000 which was wayyy out of my budget. Going through the forums on Gaijin Pot, I found a tempura cooking class for only ¥3000. ¥3000?! Craziness.

It was so good learning how to make tempura. Who knew there was an order in which you fry the vegetables and meat?! And that different vegetables are cooked at different temperatures?! Not me. At the end of the class we had an amazing tempura feast with more than enough to take home with us. I even purchased an oil thermometer from the ¥100 shop after class so I can make tempura at home!

The class organiser, Kaoru, tells me that the purpose of these classes is to introduce a wide variety of Japanese food to foreigners. I’m so disappointed I didn’t know about this earlier! I had so much fun and would love to do it again.

If you live in Tokyo or are even just on holidays, I definitely recommend doing on of these classes. It’s fun, inexpensive and a great way to learn about Japanese food.
