Day 21: I'm 94.3% Pizza
It's been hard, guys. Eating non-stop pizza for 48 hours takes its toll on you. Your desire for the cheese begins to wane, your chins increase and all you want to eat is a salad. But we soldier on because Tour Of Pizza is more important than my feelings and we need to try as many as humanly possible.
White on white.
A sfogliatella for breakfast. This guys are from Campania and are filled with sweet ricotta. They are delicious. We went to Scaturchio for our hit which is where Anthony Bourdain went in his tour of Napoli. Yes, we are basically copying everything he does.
One of each pastry, please. Actually no, we have pizza to eat.
I love this so much.
It's a Baba Vesuvio!
We found this old church on our way to Egg Castle. We thought it was impressive until we found...
THIS CHURCH. So friggin' big with artwork everywhere. Had this been Rome, we would have queued for an hour and been elbowing our way through other tourists. This, on the other hand, was fairly empty.
See? Barely anyone.
You put an offering in the box and turn on a candle. I think they call this "modern technology".
Doing laps with Vesuvio in the background.
Adam surveying the scene.
Old boys.
We made it to Egg Castle (called Castel dell'Ovo in Italian) which has something to do with a magical egg which ruled it. Or something like that. I should have paid more attention to the video the kind old guy made us watch.
The video the guy made us watch. I felt like I was in history class in school. The video was most definitely from the 90s. Possibly 80s.
Just sweeping away wedding confetti in the streets because why not?
Sex Disco. My future band name.
After a bit of searching, we found the mystical €1 Aperol Spritz bar – Cammarota SPRITZ. It was everything we'd hoped it would be and more.
Look at all the Aperol!
A welcome pit stop on our way to lunch pizza.
Not sure why I'm leaning like this.
This lunch spot was super popular and was just down the road from the spritz bar. It must be good. Cool story, Sophia.
The pizza at Starita. I never thought I would say this, but the marinara pizza I had here was the best pizza I've ever had. Marinara?! Who would have thought. Simple ingredients (but they added pecorino here) and so tasty we finished it all off. Oh, and that's a €2,50 Campario soda there. Napoli is so cheap and I love it.
These pizzas were our favourite and we didn't have to wait to get into the restaurant either. Win!
A close up of this bad boy. Now that I'm writing this post, I am actually wanting pizza again?
I look happy here, but I have no idea of the deliciousness that is about to enter my body. Yes, I'm aware that sounds a little gross.
Walking back to our B&B through a bunch of tiny little alleyways.
The final pizza. We weren't hungry but we had to do it. These are from Pizzeria Di Matteo which was conveniently down the road from our place and also highly ranked – they have won pizza world cups! We ordered their specialty pizzas which ended up being calzones and one of them was fried.
Our bodies are hurting, but we march forward. The €4 bottle of wine from the restaurant helped with this. Four euros?! Crazy.
You know, for a fried pizza it wasn't at all greasy or gross. It was actually light and full of the good stuff – cheese and meats.
Cheese inside and cheese on top. I admit I had a lot of crazy cheese dreams during my time in Napoli.
Adam living a dream. Napoli was playing someone in the football so we found a little bar that was playing it and watched it while drinking €2 beer in the streets.
I love Napoli, but I am looking forward to a few relaxing days in the Amalfi. And to a break from pizza.
