Day 58: Welcome To Paradise
Five planes in four days. It was no easy feat getting to Ishigaki but we made it. And it was humid as hell.
This was our little hotel in Naha. Nothing fancy but they were excited about Halloween and actually did a good breakfast.
It's humid, guuuuys. I've also run out of concealer and need to replace as soon as I get back to Tokyo.
The main way to get around Naha? Monorail.
"Don't get your pincer caught in the monorail doors." Advice for life.
I wanted to buy this because it was called "Pudding Club" which may just be the cutest name of all time.
Whale shake plane!
When we got to the brand spanking new Ishigaki airport there was a glorious tropical fish aquarium greeting us as we left the baggage claim. This boded well.
First stop, lunch in an old shipping container. Orion beer and taco rice. Classic Okinawa (kind of) right there.
I feel as though I've made something very similar at home when I have leftover taco mince.
Mmm taco rice.
A grey and windy day in Kabira Bay. We chose to stay at Kabira Bay because of this beach front and it was a little town with a few restaurants and cafes. We weren't looking for a resort holiday on this island.
We took a drive around the island. It's so quiet and there aren't many roads so you'd be hard pressed to get lost.
This beach was basically deserted.
Driving around Club Med. It's so green on Ishigaki!
And then we stumbled upon this sculpture park. It's called Yonagoyaki SI-SA Studio and they make Okinawan sculptures including a whole bunch of shisa (kind of like a lion mixed with a dog) who are meant to protect and ward off evil spirits.
Kind of spooky but also kind of amazing.
We headed out to local restaurant, Ajiya Jinbei, for sushi. Coincidentally our guest house host and her husband were also there, so it must be good, right?
This was a little taster dish you get (you have to pay ¥300 per person for table charge so you get a little snack). And yes, you eat the whole thing – even the head.
Local grilled prawns.
Sushi set. It's been so long since I've had sushi. If you've been reading this website, you know it's been a whole lot of pasta for months.
A whole local fish grilled and served with seaweed.
Happy to be in Japan and eating seafood.
