Day 90: Cheap Sushi, Expensive Whisky
I feel like today was quite Tokyo-esque... well by my standards anyway. It involved Starbucks (I only seem to drink this in Japan), shopping in Loft, sushi and a whisky bar.
I've become accustomed to the Tokyo life – bed late, up late. It makes sense because very little is open early and really, what am I rushing out the door for? After a solo coffee stop at Starbucks (I got the snow pecan nut latte because seasonal flavour) I headed to Loft in Shibuya to stock up things I don't really need.
They sell mini sake barrels! I wanted to get one because we had one at our wedding (a full sized version) and would have made a nice little memoir in our house but because we are taking as much whisky home as legally allowed, there is no room for sake.
There's this section in Loft which sells really specific but really clever utensils. I want this corn kernal remover thing so bad.
The Christmas card section at this time of year is mental. The cards are consistently playing their high-pitched Christmas carols and I can imagine you might lose your brain if you are unfortunate enough to be rostered onto this section.
After meeting up with Adam and doing some whisky shopping near Meguro, we headed back to the super touristy, but wonderful Uobei for cheap as chips (actually cheaper) sushi.
This is one of Adam's favourite places.
Most dishes here are ¥108 which means you can eat a tonne and it won't cost you much.
Wish a satisfying dinner sorted, we headed through a rainy Shibuya to a whisky bar in Aoyama.
A safe haven from the rain, Nikka Blender's Bar is quiet, cosy and looks like it hasn't been updated since it opened (which I kind of loved about the place).
The chairs even have "Nikka" carved into the backs of the seats.
They have a tonne of whiskies available, but the tasting sets is your best option if you want to try a selection of Nikka whiskies. The ones on the left aren't aged and are only available from the distillery and the ones on the right are aged and are apparently quite hard to come by. Both sets cost about ¥3000 each, so while the title of this post says it's expensive, it's not really considering what you're drinking.
We were the only ones in the bar! But on a cold and wet Monday night, I'm not really surprised. I hope more people go here as it's a pretty great place.
